In the Beginning – Another view

“In the Beginning” took us down the Winchesters’ history line. But could it give us more answers that we’ve asked for?

“In the Beginning,” Season Four’s third episode, revealed parts of the Winchester's and the Campbells’ history. The title was somewhat revealing: that’s how it all began, with Mary making a deal with The Yellow-Eyed Demon.

But that wasn’t necessarily the beginning, as the Campbells’ way into the supernatural world was not revealed, and “In the Beginning” may suggest another meaning all together.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1.

Season Four started with a strong religious sense, taking its title from a fundamental event in Christianity, and introducing Castiel, an Angel of the Lord.

One can argue that the Christianity path was always there, embodied in Mary (Winchester, but also the Virgin Mary) and John (Dean and Sam's father, but also John the Baptist). One may also argue that the boys' names can suggest not only a religious tone, but also a clue as to where the series is going: Dean, while having a Christian meaning, is a Hebrew word. Having different meanings, 'Din' (דין) can mean law, sentence and justice. Sam, while being accepted as a short for Samuel (and staying in the religious arena, The Prophet Samuel), can also hint toward Samael, an important figure in the Judeo-Christianity traditions, who is both good and evil.

But I digress.

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester,” a clear indication to religions’ questions driven from Judy Bloom’s bestseller “Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret,” reinforced the religious path the series has taken. Using the opening lines of the monotaistics faiths’ Holly Book in the third episode may have only strengthened a biblical tone:

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” – Genesis 1:2.

While “In the Beginning,” as in the other episodes we’ve seen this season, confronts the questions of Good versus Evil and questions whether the road to Hell is paved with good deeds, just as if the road to Heaven is paved with evil ones – it also gives a possible answer as to how it all started for the Winchesters: with Mary’s deed.

Just like Eve, the mother of all living creators; the first sinner.

And two of Eve's sons were Cain and Abel. The first killer. The first murdered.

Brother vs. brother.

The idea has been there for a long time now, but with “In the Beginning,” did fans who think this is what it will all come down to – Dean vs. Sam – just get their confirmation?
